FROM THIS MONTH'S ISSUE:Xerox Debuts Its Own Color LED Technology for Offices
Even in these uncertain economic times, Xerox continues to innovate, introducing printers and MFPs featuring new technologies and supplies. After introducing its first series of solid ink-based tabloid/A3-sized MFPs, the ColorQube 9200 family, on May 7 (Journal 5/09), Xerox announced the Phaser 7500 tabloid/A3-sized color printer series and the WorkCentre 7400 tabloid/A3- sized color MFP series on May 19. The new products are the first to use Xerox's new HiQ LED print head, which was developed jointly by Fuji Xerox and Nippon Electric Glass Company. In the past, Xerox has sourced LED-based color printers from Oki, but with the announcement of the HiQ LED print head used in the Phaser 7500 and WorkCentre 7400, which Xerox claims offers some significant advantages over traditional LED technology—that is, Oki's—Xerox is continuing down the path of moving more of its color engine technology in house. The Phaser 7500 is also the first product to use the firm's Color by Words technology. Both new color devices use Xerox's EA-HG toner, but the consumables for each model are unique to suit the needs of their respective distribution channels.
The HiQ LED print head packs more diodes per inch than conventional designs to produce a
higher print resolution (1,200 × 2,400 dpi versus 1,200 × 600 dpi). The ASIC driver controls the
intensity and timing of the LEDs in each print head for more precise color registration.
Xerox also introduced four new laser-based letter/A4-sized MFP series in May and June: one color and three monochrome. Announced on May 19, the WorkCentre 6400 is a new color MFP that is based on a Konica Minolta engine and uses new supplies, including color cartridges with higher yields than the corresponding Konica Minolta models. The WorkCentre 4250, also announced on May 19, is a Segment 4 monochrome MFP that is based on the same engine and uses the same supplies as the WorkCentre 4260 (Journal, 10/08), making this machine the only one of the new product series to use an existing set of consumables. Xerox announced the WorkCentre 3210 and 3220 Segment 2 monochrome MFPs on June 16. The new machines are based on the same Samsung engine as the single-function Phaser 3250 (Journal, 6/08) but use new toner cartridges with lower yields.
With its latest product launches, Xerox is also introducing a new naming convention. As we noted last month, solid ink-based products will be marketed under the ColorQube brand. For electrophotographic products (both laser and LED-based), all printers will be labeled Phasers, and all MFPs will carry the WorkCentre moniker.
