The pace at which original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) introduce new ink jet and laser printers is accelerating, so the competitive landscape is continually changing. OEMs' new single-function printers and multifunction peripherals (MFPs) frequently include new cartridges, which often feature new designs and new ink and toner formulations. At the same time, aftermarket cartridge vendors have improved their production capabilities in order to more rapidly bring to market their remanufactured or compatible cartridges. Gauging the potential market significance of each new cartridge is key to overall profitability for OEMs and aftermarket players alike.
Lyra's Cartridge Demand Advisory Service (CDS) quantifies the hardware installed base and annual demand for monochrome laser cartridges, color laser cartridges, and ink jet cartridges in North America, by SKU. The CDS ranks the top cartridges in order of annual demand in each product segment. For example, in 2005, HP's C9720A color laser cartridge, which is used in the HP Color LaserJet 4600 and 4650, was the number-one selling SKU in North America. With HP's huge installed base of HP Color LaserJet 4600 and 4650 devices, it is not surprising that demand for HP C9720A, C9721A, C9722A, C9723A cartridges surpassed 1.5 million units in 2005. Color laser cartridges from Oki and Konica Minolta are also among the top ten SKUs.
The CDS's 2006 color laser cartridge analysis ranks 48 different SKUs comprising 85 percent of total demand for color laser cartridges. The 2006 monochrome laser cartridge analysis ranks 91 different SKUs that comprise 93 percent of the monochrome laser cartridge market. Meanwhile, the CDS's 2006 ink jet cartridge analysis ranks 66 unique SKUs comprising 90 percent of the ink jet cartridge market. The CDS includes a "Cartridges to Watch" bulletin that identifies newly released cartridges that are likely to become top-sellers in the future.
This information is vital to third-party cartridge vendors because these firms often spend millions of dollars in research and development (R&D), legal, tooling, and setup costs to develop an aftermarket cartridge. Lyra's CDS is also a valuable tool for printer OEMs that want to gauge how their cartridge sales compare with competitors'.
CDS clients can rely on Lyra's proven, industry-respected cartridge-demand data. The CDS provides clients with custom information via client-directed inquiry and an annual telephone conference with an expert analyst to discuss the impact of the latest industry trends.
The CDS is a modular service that can be purchased in one of three formats.
