Lyra analysts serve as a vital adjunct to your internal marketing and product-planning resources.

WFS Forecast: Numbers You Can Trust
Lyra categorizes the wide-format printing market into three segments, based on the type of ink used: aqueous, solvent, or UV-curable. Aqueous printers use roll-to-roll media and water-based inks; solvent printers use roll-to-roll media and solvent inks; and UV-curable printers, which use UV-curable ink, can be roll-to-roll devices, hybrid devices, or dedicated flatbeds. To be classified as wide-format, a printer must have a print width of at least 24 inches.

Forecasts for these three printer segments are updated annually and include both shipment and revenue data. The forecast includes five years of projections from the current year forward and two years of historical data. Shipment and revenue data for the three printer segments is provided on a worldwide basis and segmented regionally, with forecasts for North America; Europe, the Middle East, and Africa (EMEA); Asia Pacific; and Latin America.

Forecast Segmentation Overview

Aqueous Hardware
  • CAD printers (such as HP's Designjet 500 and 800) that are primarily intended for CAD applications such as architectural plans and construction drawings;
  • graphics printers with print widths from 24 to 44 inches (such as Epson's Stylus Pro 7800 and 9800, HP's 42-inch Designjet 5500, and Canon's imagePROGRAF W8400) that are primarily used for graphics applications, such as fine-art printing, prepress proofing, and photographic printing; and
  • graphics printers with print widths greater than 44 inches (such as HP's 60-inch Designjet 5500, Canon's imagePROGRAF iPF9000, and Kodak's 1200i) that are used in print-for-pay shops for various graphics applications including indoor signage, trade-show graphics, and photographs.

Solvent Hardware:
  • low-end solvent printers (such as Mimaki's JV3-160SP, Roland's SolJet Pro II V SJ-645EX, and Mutoh's ValueJet) that typically use a mild type of solvent ink and sell for less than $50,000; most but not all of the printers in this segment are based on Epson print heads; Lyra subdivides the low-end solvent printer market into devices with print widths of less than a meter and those with print widths of 1 meter or more;
  • midrange solvent printers (such as MacDermid ColorSpan's DisplayMaker 98Sx, Mutoh's Toucan 86, Eastsign's Dingtec PG2508, and DGI's VistaJet VJ11-92) that are priced between $50,000 and $120,000 and have a print line of less than 3 meters; Lyra further subdivides the midrange solvent printer market into devices that are manufactured in China or Korea and those that are manufactured elsewhere; and
  • high-end solvent printers (such as the Vutek's UltraVu 3360, HP's Scitex Grand, Nur's Fresco II 8C 3200, Keundo's SupraQ3300, and Yaselan's YSL-D3500IIIS) that are typically priced higher than $120,000 or have a print line of 3 meters or more. Lyra further subdivides the high-end solvent printer market into devices that are manufactured in China or Korea and those that are manufactured elsewhere.

Flatbed UV-Curable Hardware
  • low-end UV-curable printers (such as MacDermid ColorSpan's DisplayMaker 72UVR, Raster Printer's RP-720UVZ, Gerber Scientific Product's Solara UV2, Flora's LJII 1800UV, and Infiniti's UV 1612S) that are priced less than $100,000;
  • midrange UV-curable printers (such as Océ's Arizona T220UV, Zünd's Uvjet 215 Plus, Durst's Rho 205, Vutek's PressVu 200, and Graphics One's Go Fuzion UV) that are priced between $100,000 and $300,000; and
  • high-end UV-curable flatbed printers (such as Durst's Rhopac, Leggett and Platt's Virtu, Gandinnovations' Jeti 3150UV, Inca Digital Printer's Columbia Turbo, Vutek's PressVu UV180, and Nur's Tempo II UV) that are priced above $300,000.

Ink
  • aqueous ink used in CAD printers;
  • aqueous ink used in graphics printers;
  • eco- and mild-solvent ink;
  • "true" solvent ink; and
  • UV-curable ink.

Media
Media is forecast in total square meters based on the ink types listed above. For example, Lyra provides forecasts for the total square meters of material used by "true" solvent printers or by UV-curable printers. In addition, Lyra provides the following media forecasts:
  • CAD media: uncoated and coated;
  • graphics media: coated, photo, film, banner, self-adhesive vinyl, and fine art;
  • solvent media: banner (scrim), self-adhesive vinyl, and other; and
  • UV-curable: flexible and rigid materials.

At different times during the forecast year, Lyra will break out total media consumption based on popular subcategories. For example, Lyra provides forecasts for backlit film (as a subcategory of the graphics film category that also includes white film and clear film), self-adhesive vinyl (broken out by calendered and cast vinyl), fine-art media (segmented by canvas and paper), and photo paper used with solvent printers (a subcategory of the "solvent other" category).
